Movie Trailer – Taichi 0 (2012)
Here’s the English trailer for Taichi 0 (2012) the first film in a new trilogy that will surprisingly be at TIFF in September with an October 26 limited release in the USA courtesy of Well Go USA. Martial arts wire-fu movies are a dime a dozen really but this one is a bit different as it marries the genre with, of all things, steampunk. While the jury is still out on how well this genre mish-mash will work it certainly makes for some eye-catching visuals.
The English trailer is basically exactly the same as the Chinese one released many months ago except obviously replacing the Chinese text with English but also changing the music. I’ve included a link to the Chinese trailer below for comparison and it’s just my opinion but the hyperactive song they’ve chosen makes it stand out far more than the English rendition.
As for Taichi 0 (2012) the movie has been converted to 3D and along with its sequel, Taichi Hero (2012), the two films cost around $34.5 million USD. Both moivies are directed by Hong Kong actor/director Stephen Fung who helmed House of Fury (2005), Enter the Phoenix (2004) and most recently, Jump (2009). The movie features newcomer martial artist Yuan Xiaochao in the lead role supported by a cast that includes Tony Leung Ka-Fai, Angelababy, Eddie Peng, Shu Qi, Daniel Wu and William Feng.
Here’s the official synopsis: “Young genius Yang Luchan travels to Chen Village to learn the forbidden secrets of martial arts, but learns that the village is menaced by a formidable battalion of Steampunk soldiers. The villagers realize that in order to save their home, they must trust this strange outsider with their knowledge of Tai Chi.”
Taichi 0 (2012) premieres September 27-28 in many South-Asian countries with a ridiculously fast turnaround seeing the sequel Taichi Hero (2012) opening less than a month later on October 26. Those who really hate 3D will be glad to know the film is being released in 2D as well.
Oh, it also doesn’t hurt when your producer is Jet Li himself and the martial arts choreographer is Sammo Hung.
Banging my head the only other big budget movie that feels remotely close to this genre mish-mash would probably be the awful Wild Wild West (1999) so hopefully Taichi 0 (2012) ends up much better than that mess.

I hope it is good as well! I haven’t seen a decent martial arts film in a while.
