TV Ads – Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)
How in the world this franchise keeps making money is beyond me but someone somewhere likes it thus here we go again with the fifth film in the franchise, Resident Evil: Retribution. I’ve been a fan of the video games since that stupid dog came flying out of the window back in the first Resident Evil game and scared me senseless. Admittedly, the last few games more resemble a Michael Bay action flick rather than true surivial horror yet I still find myself intrigued enough to pick them up. However, the movies are of dubious quality yet they keep chugging on like the energizer bunny. Here are two of the newest TV ads for the film opening September 14, 2012.
Regardless of what I think there is no arguing the numbers and this is one franchise that like Fast and The Furious is clearly defying the odds with each installment pulling in even more money than the last. To put that into some perspective even high-powered franchises like Pirates of the Caribbean, The Matrix and even Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy all show signs of diminishing returns yet Resident Evil keeps chugging on proving to have zombie legs that keep it going. It just won’t die.
Take a gander at this snazzy table I drew up showing the strength of the franchise (not accounting for inflation) and one begins to wonder just how long this series can go before one installment finally bombs. However, I’d just point out the obvious inconsistency in Resident Evil: Afterlife being so high was partly due to the high 3D surcharge that radically boosted its box office gross. How will will Resident Evil: Retribution do? I’m guessing less than Afterlife but still enough to ensure Part 6 gets made.
