Trailer – Red Dawn (2012)
After what seems like an eternity here is the trailer for the Red Dawn (2012) remake starring Thor (Chris Hemsworth) himself that is now scheduled for release in the USA/Canada on November 21. While the original film was never a favourite of mine it did manage to make decent money for the time and is credited as being the first film to be released in the United States with the PG-13 rating. As for this new remake some might have heard about the massive issues surrounding its release as it was initially scheduled to open way back on November 24, 2010 but due to a slew of reasons it was constantly pushed back.
One of the problems was due to MGM’s financial issues which forced it to undergo massive corporate restructuring and eventual bankruptcy that put several movie projects on hold. However, while going bankrupt was no joke the problem with the Red Dawn remake was much deeper than that as portions of the script leaked showing that the film’s original antagonists were Chinese which politically rankled many and finally forced MGM to go back and reshoot parts of the film to change the invading force from Chinese to North Korean.
Say what? Yes, those wily North Koreans have somehow been able to invade America en masse with their conventional military might no doubt crossing the massive Pacific Ocean with all their hardware without the US military noticing. This is coming from a country which ranks near the bottom of every single imaginable UN study where the average salary is about $2 USD per month.
Anyone remember this particular satellite image which shows the Korean Peninsula and the massive disparity of light/illumination levels between North and South Korea? I realize most go to movies to avoid reality but watching North Koreans invade the USA is as believable as giant sentient pillows appearing tomorrow and taking over the planet with their psychic powers.
Oh well, I don’t have high hopes for this movie no matter how unbelievable the plot because it has an awful release date which puts it two weeks after Skyfall and one week after The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 which will steamroll anything in its second week. Worse still, Red Dawn opens the same day as Ang Lee’s Life of Pi and Dreamwork’s new animated film, Rise of the Guardians. Box office prognosis: It’s going to get massacred and end up quickly in video rental stores.
I tried to find the official synopsis but alas came up empty so I’ll write it myself: A rag-tag team of teenagers (led by Thor) decide to do their patriotic duty and save their small town from a massive North Korean military invasion.

Red Dawn (2012) Trailer:

hmmm… I’m always sceptical of old movie remakes. This one with the north Korean invasion? Not very convincing! But maybe I’ll watch it on video.
Yeah, Hollywood seems to get lazy when it has to resort to doing remakes. However, I’m not really opposed to them if the new cast and crew try and bring something different to the narrative. Unfortunately, most times you end up like Total Recall which dramatically improves the visual effects but forgets to do anything creative with the plot.
